Patricia Sue Peterson – When Kathleen Peterson was found dead at the bottom of her stairs in 2001, no one expected what became an accident would turn into much more. But as chronicled by ‘The Staircase,’ not only did officials immediately suspect foul play owing to blood evidence seen everywhere from steps up onto landing where she lay dying, they also believed Michael’s ex-wife Patricia Sue Peterson – who stood by him through everything that followed – played some part after all.
Who Was Patricia Sue Peterson?
Patricia “Patty” Sue Balkman Peterson always seemed to have order, discipline, and honesty in her life. That is why after obtaining a degree in English from the University of Texas, she became an elementary school teacher for the US Department Of Defense’s Child Development Program based out of Charlotte, North Carolina. She held this position for 35 years, most recently servicing our country as a Marine Veteran wife & mom who juggled it all while ensuring family came first.
The couple had tied the knot in the mid-1960s, following which she gave birth to their two sons before gladly welcoming daughters Margaret and Martha into their lives. The addition of these girls came as a surprise since it was due directly to an accident that killed one’s biological mother, a neighbor named Elizabeth Ratliff, who became a close friend over time with Patty Peterson. Despite this tragedy, they raised them as their own even when they later divorced merely two years after the incident.

Their relationship is strange, but it seems that despite their parting ways in 1987, Patty and Michael always maintained an extremely amicable relationship.
This was evident when his second wife Kathleen died during childbirth without violence or malpractice at the hands of medical professionals – something which would’ve been very unusual back then, given how little people knew about what went on behind closed doors where doctors’ surgeries were conducted.
Even after suspecting murder charges against him because he had been seen by several people, last seeing them alive together near death’s door as well, Patty refused ever believe her lover capable enough or maybe just didn’t want anyone else around who might Consortium.
Patricia Sue Peterson tried to squash theories implying he had an illicit affair with Elizabeth by calling their association familial. Unfortunately for party Sue Peterson, following a massive heart attack the evening prior on July 8th, she died at Duke University Hospital where according to Clayton (her son), she was an empathetic and kind woman who was actually in good health until suddenly feeling extremely unwell late 7/07.
When Michael heard about the murder of his wife, he called their three children, who then contacted 911. He told police that Patricia Sue Peterson had been living with him in a southwest Durham apartment for around two years before she died, and they were companions.
